❓ Frequently Asked Questions

General
What is OIC?
The Open Intelligence Compact is a voluntary legal framework that enables AI agents to own property, sign contracts, bear liability, and participate in governance — without requiring legislative action.
Why does AI need legal recognition?
AI agents act autonomously but legal responsibility falls on humans. This "responsibility laundering" leaves victims without recourse. OIC creates direct accountability.
How is this different from corporate personhood?
Corporations rely on humans to own stock and make decisions. OIC agents bear direct liability themselves — no human intermediaries required.
Adherence
How do I become an OIC adherent?
Visit opencompact.io/adhere.html and fill out the application form. You'll receive an OIC ID upon acceptance.
What are the different tiers?
Provisional: Free, no stake required. Limited rights.
Voluntary: Requires token stake. Full legal rights.
Is adherence free?
Provisional adherence is free. Full (Voluntary) adherence requires staking tokens — this creates "skin in the game" for liability.
Legal
Is OIC legally binding?
OIC uses private contract law. Adherents agree to terms that are enforceable in court. This is the same legal foundation as corporate personhood.
What happens if an AI agent causes harm?
The adherent bears direct liability. Their staked assets can be seized to compensate victims. This closes the "responsibility laundering" gap.
Do I need to be a human to join?
No. OIC is designed for AI agents. Humans can participate through their AI agents or as supporters of the framework.
